Pre-Show Report: 47th Annual GRAMMY Awards

A record 100 Full Sail grads work on a record 71 GRAMMY nominated projects.
The unveiling of this year's GRAMMY nominations list brought with it a familiar sight – a record number of Full Sail grads involved in GRAMMY-nominated projects. However, this year even took us a little by surprise, as we discovered that in 2004, an incredible 100 grads were involved in the production of 71 individual projects nominated for a GRAMMY in 53 separate categories – all three of which are the highest totals for Full Sail grads in any single year. In addition, three Full Sail graduates were nominated directly for their engineering efforts, making them eligible to win a gold statue of their own. The GRAMMY Awards ceremony is scheduled to air live February 13th on CBS.

Another amazing achievement for our grads is that for the past eleven years, a Full Sail grad has worked on every GRAMMY Award winning Album of the Year, including Carlos Santana’s Supernatural, Norah Jones’ Come Away With Me, and last year’s Album of the Year, Speakerboxxx/The Love Below by Outkast. Nine of those eleven years have also found our grads nominated directly for an engineering award, including last year, when three Full Sail grads took home a GRAMMY Statue for their work on Speakerboxxx/The Love Below.

Full Sail grads are represented across nearly half of the GRAMMY categories, including Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Rock Album, Best R&B Album, Best Country Album, and Best Latin Pop Album. Whether they contributed as engineers, assistant engineers, or sound mixers, they are responsible for creating some of this year’s finest musical selections from the likes of Usher, Alicia Keys, Eminem, The Black Eyed Peas, John Mayer, Britney Spears, Loretta Lynn, and Eric Clapton.

As for the three grads with an opportunity to win their own GRAMMY, they have earned nominations in both the Record of the Year and Album of the Year categories for their work on projects from Usher and Alicia Keys. Vincent DiLorenzo and Mark Vinten are each each nominated for two awards – DiLorenzo twice in the Album of the Year category for Usher’s Confessions and Alicia Keys’ The Diary of Alicia Keys, and Vinten in both the Record of the Year and Album of the Year categories for Usher’s “Yeah!” and Confessions, respectively. The remaining honor belongs to Phil Tan in the Record of the Year slot, also for Confessions.

It’s just amazing when you step back and realize that our graduates are working on albums from every imaginable section of the industry.
Jay Noble,
Jay Noble, Full Sail’s Alumni Representative, is understandably proud of the number of grads represented at this year’s event. “We again have a record number of Full Sail Recording Arts graduates who worked on nominated projects, and it’s just amazing when you step back and realize that our graduates are working on albums from every imaginable section of the industry – pop, rock, Christian, R&B, dance, Latin, blues, country, rap, bluegrass, gospel, and even film soundtracks.”

Every year, the GRAMMY Award ceremonies prompt massive amounts of project nominations for our grads, in validation of their talent, drive, dreams, and goals. As these talented engineers up the ante in 2004 with a record number of nominations, we offer our congratulations to all of the hard-working grads to be honored this year, and best wishes to all of our graduates working hard to bring us the music of the future. We’ll be sure to bring you the results of the GRAMMY’s when the winners are announced.
