Full Sail Student Commissioned by TIME Magazine to Feature Prominent Artwork

January 28, 2009

WINTER PARK, FL, January 28, 2009 – Full Sail University (www.fullsail.edu), an award-winning entertainment media institution, is honored to recognize current Digital Arts & Design student, Dylan Roscover (www.gorosco.com), for his latest typographic piece which was published this week by TIME Magazine (www.time.com) featuring President Barack Obama, and accompanied the leading story, “President Obama One Year In.”

The piece, originally commissioned by TIME for the cover, was presented in the February 1, 2010 issue within the Table of Contents of the magazine, and depicts a burdened President Obama who “took power at a time of crisis.” After seeing his work online, TIME Magazine Design Director D.W. Pine contacted Roscover on Jan. 16 and asked him to design an image of President Barack Obama, in the same style as his previous typeface-based illustration, “Steven Paul Jobs” and offered him three days to complete the project.

“Mr. Pine saw the Steve Jobs piece in Business Week,” said Roscover. His copyright-free Jobs image was used in Business Week’s online site, published in the Daily Telegraph, and continues to accumulate visits and downloads on deviantART, where it has nearly 250,000 views. It has also been linked to, blogged about, and tweeted all over the world.

Similarly, the Obama image would be made up of text – in this case, words and phrases that define his presidency and the climate of the country since he’s been in office. Pine sent Roscover two categories of words and phrases, “one list of more important words and phrases and a smaller list for the smaller text that would be almost the texture of his body,” said Roscover.

The image was based on a photograph of President Obama taken by photographer Brooks Kraft. Roscover’s artwork was originally meant for the cover but instead another photograph of Obama taken in the Oval Office by Callie Shell was featured.

Roscover was still compensated for the cover rate and said, “I got the table of contents, which was wonderful.” The piece includes 12,680 characters, not including spaces and took roughly 20 hours to put together. “The process of setting type is very tedious and you have to sort of take breaks,” said Roscover. “That amounts to about ten and a half characters per minute – a pretty fast-paced piece!” Roscover is scheduled to graduate from Full Sail University on July 2, 2010.
