Bringing TV to the Web: Adam McCabe

Designing graphics and video content for BBE, the Digital Arts & Design grad is pushing the next phase of web entertainment

The past year has seen a sharp rise in the amount of original programming available on the Web. As a Graphic and Web Designer at BBE (Broadband Enterprises), Full Sail Digital Arts & Design graduate Adam McCabe has been helping to distribute content for some of the biggest companies in online entertainment.

“We’re one of the largest distributors of video on the Internet right now,” he shares. “I’ve designed for people like Sony, Warner Bros., Paramount, and the Discovery Channel. Online video viewers are increasing by hundreds of percents, and this is just the beginning. People are really starting to discover us and what we’re doing.”

BBE’s most recent syndication work has included Michelle Branch’s Going Green Tour, Hewlett-Packard’s college-themed interior design show Dorm Storm, and the upcoming fashion series In Seam.

“People are looking to the Web for shows like these because it’s so quick,” he suggests. “You have people in offices or at school whose only spare time is being able to watch their favorite 5-minute show. Big names like The Clone Wars proved that there’s a lot that can be done in a short amount of time, and consumers are responding to that.”

Broadband is also innovating the way companies are able to incorporate video into your online experience, with their unique video player technology, CDE (contextual distribution engine), creating a more seamless blend of text and video content.

“Say you’re reading an article about Barack Obama on the Web,” Adam explains about the technology. “When a page uses CDE you’ll see an icon on screen on any page where his name is mentioned, and be able to click that and have a context-sensitive video player pop up and show you his latest speech. We already have around 75-90 major websites jumping on board CDE already, so it’s pretty cool, and something we think will really be catching on.”

Online programming is slowly breaking into the mainstream, and with major media outlets embracing it with some of their biggest properties, Adam is excited by the possibilities of the medium to expand the ways people get quality entertainment.

“It’s only going to be getting bigger,” he assures. “Especially because you have shows like Heroes and The Office catching on with little ‘webisodes’ that people want to keep up with. We’ve barely scratched the surface of what we can do with Internet programming, and it’s that ‘I don’t know’ factor that keeps me going – I just want to take on the next developments in this industry. That’s really the best part of my day, being surprised by what happens next.”
