Full Sail Graduates Profiled in Animation Magazine

Magazine spotlights their work on James Cameron's Groundbreaking Film Avatar

Full Sail Computer Animation graduates Ronnie Menahem and Jeff Unay were recently profiled in the February 2010 issue of Animation Magazine, in an article titled “Full Sail Ahead to Avatar’s Pandora.” The story spotlighted their work on director James Cameron’s blockbuster Avatar, and how their education at Full Sail has helped them in their professional careers.

Ronnie (shots pipeline technical director/effects technical director) and Jeff (facial lead) worked on the film at WETA Digital, the Oscar-winning special effects house in Wellington, New Zealand – the studio previously responsible for the visual effects in such films as District 9, King Kong, The Day the Earth Stood Still, and the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

The article highlights their experiences in the Computer Animation program, with the pair speaking about specific courses that have helped them in their careers. They gave examples of different class projects in lighting and 3D modeling, and how they were able to use those same skills while working on Avatar’s revolutionary visual effects.

Both grads also cited their extensive lab time with Autodesk Maya as a major stepping stone in preparation for their careers, with Unay explaining, “I’m not sure how far I would have gotten without immersing myself in Maya.”

Animation Magazine was founded in 1986, and is a staple among artists and animators, profiling the latest industry trends. Full Sail would like to congratulate Ronnie and Jeff on their recent recognition, and wish them continued success in their careers.
