Trading early morning office hours for some quality time in the great outdoors isn't just allowed at Connor Hasson's job – it's actually encouraged. As web development manager at Moving Mountains Chalets in Steamboat, Colorado, the Full Sail Web Design & Development graduate has found a work environment that directly caters to two of his greatest passions: web design and skiing.
"We all have a clause in our contracts that if it snows more than a certain amount of inches, we don't have to get into the office until 11:00 a.m. so that we can get the first tracks in the morning," Connor says. "And in the summertime, we can go for mountain bike rides in the morning. It's a great place to work."
Moving Mountains provides guests with luxury vacation rentals and ski chalets in Steamboat. A small private business, the company's staff consists of nine full-time members, with Connor residing as the sole member of the web team. Not bad for someone who knew nothing about web development just a few years ago.
"I had zero experience whatsoever before coming to Full Sail," says Connor. "The main reason that I wanted to learn more was because I always wanted to start my own company, and I wanted my website to look awesome. Rather than have to hire someone to be my web person, I wanted to learn everything myself. I was always into art and design, so that helps me on the creative end. Once I started learning at Full Sail, the brain work involved in coding just came along."
Connor's biggest project right now has been laying the groundwork for the eventual relaunch of the Moving Mountains website. But there have been plenty of mini-projects along the way, including microsites for the company's pay-per-click campaigns, as well as maintaining the functionality of the current website.
"It's great to be in control of making a lot of the tech decisions at my job, and all the people around me are able to give me feedback that genuinely comes from the standpoint of the user,” he says.
Another recent event for Connor has little to do with web, but strikes a personal chord with him. For the second year in a row, Moving Mountains is working with Ride 4 Yellow, a 26-mile mountain bike ride fundraising event for cancer. "My dad is a survivor, and my dad’s mother lost her battle so it means a lot to me," he says. "Someday hearing the words 'you have cancer' will be followed with 'but we have a cure.' It's really great to work for a company that involves itself in these kinds of events."
When he looks back at his Full Sail days, Connor finds that he's still using the same methods he learned in school in his daily routine. "All the steps I went through in Final Project are the same ones I use now," he says. "Full Sail prepared me for everything, from talking about ideas and concepts, to preparing paperwork, wireframing, testing, and development. It's helped me out in the long-run, for sure."
