Game Design Master’s Program Launching this Fall

New program focuses on the specifics of game production and design.
Full Sail University is launching a Game Design Master of Science degree program in September.

“The Game Design program trains people to become the production managers and designers of a game, allowing them to lead a team of artists and developers in a professional studio setting,” explains Erik Noteboom, Full Sail’s Director of Digital Arts Education. “Traditionally there has been nowhere that people can get that training – they’ve really just been groomed on the job. So we created this Master’s degree to address that need.”

The new 12-month program blends the theories of great game design with proven management skills that yield effective results from a production team. Specialized courses include Asset Management, Production Leadership, Game Design, Game Project and Team Management, Marketing and Media Relations, Production Methodologies, and more.

“Your training will culminate in a Capstone Project where you are going to manage the complete production of a game,” Noteboom explains. “You will join students from our Game Development and Game Art programs and lead them to design a new game from the ground up. The teams may grow as large as ten people, where you have five programmers, three to four graphic artists, an audio engineer, and a digital artist to help with your website. You basically form a small company responsible for creating a game product.

“The industry is rapidly growing – the budgets, the scope of the games – and they need producers and managers at all stages of design and production,” Noteboom continues. “This program is going to help produce a graduate with the ability to lead people in a common direction – and that’s really attractive to today’s studios.”
