Game Art Bachelor's Degree Now Available Online

The new program launches Aug. 31, teaches same core principles as campus degree
Full Sail University recently announced the launch of an online version of our Game Art Bachelor’s Degree Program. The new program has been designed to take advantage of the Full Sail Online platform, and will open our digital graphics curriculum to more artists looking to start a career in the video game industry..

The new degree program teaches the same core principles found throughout our campus program, combining traditional art theory with the latest in video game asset production – with areas of focus that include 2D and 3D animation, lighting and shading for games, character animation and rigging, and demo reel creation. Additional online classes have also been introduced, expanding on such topics as art fundamentals, character rigging, and character animation, as well as new courses in Game Cinematics and Game Asset Review.

“We’ve modified the program around the needs of our online students, and have worked very hard to maintain the same quality level found on campus,” says Pete Bandstra, Program Director for the Game Art and Computer Animation programs. “It’s a tightly focused degree that will allow them to produce projects that follow the same standards and processes you’d see in the industry, and it was really important to us to maintain that consistency to help them show off their both their talent and technical proficiency to employers.”

The video game industry has become increasingly specialized, and the online Game Art program features a comprehensive study of the art and technology that go into developing high-resolution graphics across a number of different platforms – helping students develop skill sets that cater to their field of interest. Potential careers cover everything from character modeling to art direction, and include such roles as 3D environment artist, character animator, level designer, technical director, and texture map artist.

“We’ve seen a real mix of people interested in the program – those new to college, but also those who already have some type of art degree or are working in the graphics industry, and want this to further their education,” Bandstra says. “And for different reasons they can’t leave the area they’re in – their career or their family is based in that community – and we’ve now become a viable option for them. That kind of response is really encouraging to us.”

The online Game Art program will offer students the opportunity to develop their career skills while serving the industry’s growing need for artists to create quality game content. The staff has used the foundation of our campus degree to build curriculum that will resonate with online students, and they’re looking forward to opening up the program to new talent as the launch date approaches.

“We’ve really tried hard to create a program that pushes students and pushes the quality level so that it meets the industry’s standards,” Bandstra says. “We’ve built a good reputation with the Game Art program, and we’re looking forward to taking that online. It’s an exciting time for us.”
