Pirates Does it Again, Others Lag Behind
July 24, 2006
Even with four new films showing up on screens across the country, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest once again took the #1 spot on the box office charts. With a $322 million gross only 16 days after its release, Pirates has reached the $300 million mark faster than any film in history.
Riding high on the recent popularity boom of animated features, Monster House debuted at #2 on the box office charts. Earning $23 million didn’t break any records, but it did beat out the other weekend openings, including the Uma Thurman flick My Super Ex-Girlfriend, which fizzled with only 8.7 million in ticket sales.
Other new films did fare slightly better than the bitter superhero, with M. Night Shyamalan’s adult bedtime story, The Lady in the Water coming in at #3 with $18.9 million. Clerks II scraped onto the charts as well, landing in the #6 spot with only $9.62 million in sales.
