New Bachelor of Science Degree: Web Design & Development

Program focuses on a balanced curriculum that emphasizes both design and coding
Opening up new avenues of opportunity, Full Sail introduces the Web Design & Development Bachelor of Science Degree Program. Launching in January 2008, the program is designed to prepare students to join one of the most rapidly developing industries in our society.

With the Internet’s cultural prominence at an all-time high, there is an increasing need for individuals who are capable of building the websites where the world comes together – to do business, socialize, research, and more. Students in this degree program receive a holistic vision of web design and development where design and aesthetic techniques are taught in balance with programming and coding.

Students will learn about web development by taking part in hands-on assignments and projects that incorporate design and usability, writing code in formats like XHTML, CSS, and XML, and publishing content for a variety of formats, including the emerging mobile device platform for cell phones and PDAs.

The Web Design & Development Degree came about as a natural extension of the Digital Arts & Design program offered at Full Sail. Citing a need for a full curriculum aimed at students interested in both the web’s design and technical aspects, Web Design & Development Program Director Bill Bain worked to develop a program that focuses on front-end design, back-end development, client-side scripting development, and Web Standards deployment. “The great thing about this program,” Bain says, “is that students are getting everything they need in one program.”

Students will sharpen their design skills to create websites that are user-friendly and dynamic. They’ll also become fluent in Flash development, including advanced ActionScript 3.0 – the Flash scripting language – adding further interactivity and enhancing their creations. To increase their sites’ functionality and ease-of-use, students will develop an efficient and robust back-end, while also learning the web standards that ensure sites are usable on multiple formats and in multiple browsers.

With portfolio and skill assessment offered within the program and the opportunity to present applications in the realms of both IT and Design, students will receive a comprehensive web development experience as preparation for entering the industry.

“We’re really trying to cover all the bases with this program,” Bain says. “Now we are able to create a much better, more well-rounded web developer.”
