Your favorite musicians don’t work alone. It takes a dedicated team of agents, managers, publicists, and assistants to coordinate tour schedules, promotional appearances, marketing decisions, and more to keep their busy careers on track.
“It’s an exciting part of the business to be in,” Full Sail graduate Whitney Bishop explains about her job at Career Artist Management, one of the industry’s fastest growing music management companies. “You’re kind of the barrier between the outside world and these big artists. Every day’s a surprise, and it’s always fun to see where it takes me.”
Two years after graduating Full Sail with degrees in Recording Arts and Entertainment Business, Whitney has already worked in the music division of two renowned talent agencies, William Morris Agency and Creative Artists Agency. “You read about these places growing up, and never in my life did I think I would work for them,” she says looking back at her career path. “Both previous companies really set me up and prepared me to do the job that I have today to the best of my ability.”
The artist management field requires a special kind of dedication, and Whitney Bishop has found a perfect fit for her passion at Career Artist Management. Even with her Blackberry now permanently attached to her ear, that 24-hour interaction with these artists has become her favorite part of life behind the scenes of the entertainment industry.
Whitney’s current role at CAM has her working in the office of artist manager and CEO Jordan Feldstein, coordinating schedules for some of the biggest names in music, with the company’s diverse roster of clients including Maroon 5, Vanessa Carlton, Lenny Kravitz, Kenny G, Megadeth, Stone Temple Pilots, Alex Band, Phantom Planet, Relient K, and Collective Soul to name a few.
“Working here, you interact on a much more personal level with the artists than I ever expected,” she explains. “If there’s anything that they need, it’s your job to make sure they get it. It can be about where they’re eating for dinner, where they’re staying when they’re out of town, if they’re going on vacation, what their merchandise looks like – every single part of their career and everyday lives. And I really love that side of it.”
“Seeing the people that I work with happy is the most rewarding part of my job,” she admits. “So when something happens that’s a direct result of this office, I couldn’t be happier. They’ll release a new album and it debuts in the top ten, or I’ll turn on the radio and hear one of their songs – that kind of thing is a really nice feeling because you know you had a little bit to do with it.”
“It also really hits me when I go to one of our clients’ shows and see them interacting with their fans, because it kind of reminds you that you’re still a fan too,” she adds. “I really look forward to growing with this company, and with these artists as they grow. Since merging with Frontline/Azoff Music Management earlier this year we’ve already doubled in size, so who knows where this company will be in three years, but I look forward to it.”
