Full Sail was originally established in Ohio in 1979, offering audio courses that were taught by industry professionals. Courses were also conducted in Orlando, and as interest and enrollment increased, Full Sail permanently moved to Orlando in 1980. Since then, Full Sail has gradually added additional Associate's, Bachelor’s, and Master’s Degrees.
Full Sail University is licensed by the Commission for Independent Education, Florida Department of Education to offer Associate of Science, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Master of Science, and Master of Fine Arts degree programs. Full Sail's college campus is situated in a suburb of Orlando, Florida called Winter Park, a town that plays host to residential communities and light commerce. The school is 15 minutes from downtown Orlando, 35 minutes from Disney and Universal Studios, 1 hour from Cape Canaveral and the Atlantic beaches, and less than 2 hours from the Gulf of Mexico.

The schedule at Full Sail is demanding. It is very difficult to have a full-time job and attend Full Sail at the same time. It is probably feasible to have a part-time job in order to have some spending money.
Full Sail has several clubs and organizations that are related to the media industry, including a student chapter of the Audio Engineering Society, MEISA (Music & Entertainment Industry Student Assn.), Film Society, Black Student Union, Christian Campus Fellowship, Digital Art and Design Association, LAN Games Group, and Special Effects Society.
Full Sail is centrally located within walking distance of great housing, many restaurants, banks, shops, and medical facilities. Orlando has a public transportation system available for students without vehicles who need to go beyond the immediate area.
