Full Sail University and AdventHealth University Advance to the Next Round of I/ITSEC’s Iron Dev Competition

These two universities partner to produce visualization technology to support the unique challenges of the United States Armed Forces

Today, Full Sail University and AdventHealth University are proud to announce being one of five teams selected for the 2020 Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC) Iron Dev competition. The competition, in its second year, will allow teams to develop a training solution to improve warfighting readiness for four branches of the United States Armed Forces: Air Force, Army, Navy and the Marines Corps.

This year's competition is challenging applicants to create a distributed augmented reality (AR)/virtual reality (VR) solution to cater to the unique needs of the four branches of the United States Armed Forces. Full Sail University and AdventHealth University's proposed solution will allow users to visualize multiple COVID-19 data points over time and space.

"At Full Sail, one of our research focus areas is learning, simulation and training. Conceptualizing a proposal that focuses on education, specifically as it relates to COVID-19 was relevant and fit well with research we have already been conducting in the education space," said Dr. Shawn Stafford, Director of Research at Full Sail University. "Once produced, our technology will allow users to make cause and effect connections with COVID-19 data points much easier through the manipulation of data in a 3D space."

The Full Sail University and AdventHealth University team was selected based on four main criteria of the Iron Dev selection committee:

  • 1. Potential of the team to develop a distributed AR/VR training system.
  • 2. Team composition based on skills.
  • 3. The team's passion for the competition and its purpose.
  • 4. The merits and novelty of the team's proposed solution to the initial challenge.

"The work we are doing with our partners at Full Sail University will aid in the understanding of COVID-19. To ensure there can be a real-world application of this new technology, our team of designers and developers will lean on AdventHealth's data analytics team for guidance," said Dan Lim, Vice President of Educational Technology and Innovation at AdventHealth University.

Before receiving feedback from Iron Dev's technical experts, competing teams are given nearly two months to produce a prototype of the initial concept presented to the selection committee. During the feedback session, teams will be given the "secret ingredient," which they are expected to incorporate into the AR/VR solution. The final show will be held on Thursday, Dec. 3, where a team of judges and the general public will place their votes in for the winner of the following categories: Most Innovative Solution, Most Effective Solution and People's Choice.

The general public will be able to cast their votes on Thursday, Dec. 3, live during the virtual event.
